Blog Post #1 Kim Mulkey

My master’s degree is in library media and it was during my program that I felt pulled into the world of technology. I am a firm believer that technology and library media are tools that students and teachers need to enhance the curriculum. The article Best Sites for the Technology Leader focuses on the Library Media Specialist as a technology leader. Even though I am a Technology teacher and facilitator now, I still am drawn to the overlap with library media. This article gives great sources to help a leader stay current with trends and new emerging technologies.

I would add http://educationworld.com/ as one of my favorites to this author’s list. I also think that attending conferences aids in staying on top of the current trends, as well as reminding us of the “tried and true” methods. I feel that continual learning of a leader is a key component in being an effective technology leader.

  1. I agree that continuous education is key to staying on top. It's so important that, as educators, we can speak familiarly about current trends and information. We are often the only link to technology our students have. I am disappointed in myself when my students ask a tech question and I do not know the answer to it. I teach English and I still want to be that resource for them.
That was a good point about staying current with conferences, too. I came from Florida where conferences were encouraged, if not pushed upon you as a teacher of any subject. I have noticed a severe shift in the attitude regarding conferences since I have moved to Georgia.
By the way, I also love educationworld.com. It has saved me when I have been brain dead preparing a lesson more than once.

  2. I found the Education Podcast Network very beneficial. This site is useful for all teachers no matter what their current technological skills are. It defines what podcasts are and covers all of the basics so technologically inexperienced teachers will not feel overwhelmed. It also has podcasts for every conceivable topic arranged by subjects that make it easy for teachers to find and use in their teaching. This is a great site.
